Geeking out on the Detox

The 3-day juice detox insures that the daily vitamin A recommendation of 700 RE (Retinol Equivalent) for women and 900 RE for men will be reached. In fact, the RE values is much higher than the daily recommendations, but don’t worry, because the type of vitamin A you gain by drinking fresh fruits and vegetables is called provitamin A.

Provitamin A, also known as carotenoids, is not dangerous in high amounts because the body only converts the carotenoids to as much Vitamin-A the body needs. The rest have other uses in vitro. There are many different carotenoids but the amount of beta-carotene in fruit and vegetables are especially high. Therefor, beta-carotene is interesting to study.

Joe & The Juice uses carrots, kale and spinach in many of our juices, including the juices we use in the detox. These three vegetables have very high amounts of beta-carotene in them, most of which is in their pigment.

Beta-carotene is also an antioxidant. It protects the body from damaging molecules called free radicals. Free radicals damage cells through a process known as oxidation. Over time, this damage can lead to a number of chronic illnesses. By reducing the damage done by free radicals, many studies suggest that beta-carotene may reduce the development of heart disease and cancer.

So, our detox doesn’t just provide you with the sufficient amount of vitamin-A but it also delivers a nutritionally bonus of provitamin A, beta-carotene.
